What We Do

As a client of Burgundy, there is no intermediary. You have a direct relationship with the people who make investment decisions on your behalf. And, since more than three-quarters of our people are owners in the firm, our interests are directly aligned with yours.

Our Investment Counsellors are fiduciaries, not commissioned sales people. We act as the steward for you and your investments, providing professional thinking and judgment to help you devise a customized investment plan.

Every client is different. Our goal is to put you in the best position to meet your long-term investment objectives. We work with you to ensure your plan remains appropriate as market conditions change over time and your financial circumstances evolve.

When we first meet with you, our focus is on understanding your unique situation and needs.

We identify your short- and long-term goals, tolerance for volatility, need for liquidity or cash flow, and expectations from your investment portfolio. We also discuss your investment experience and the role your Burgundy investment portfolio will play in the context of your total wealth.

We integrate your investment objectives and risk tolerances with the realities of current market conditions and asset class expectations.

Based on your unique situation and needs, we determine your asset allocation.

  • Equities, fixed income and cash considerations
  • Market capitalization: small- and large-cap equities
  • Geographic diversification within equities: Canada, U.S., Europe, Asia, Emerging Markets

We then select investments to achieve your asset allocation, using Burgundy’s proprietary investment platform of pooled funds and segregated account options.

Over time and through varying market swings, we work closely with you to ensure you remain committed to your long-term goals.

We work with you to assess if your investment plan remains appropriate in the context of your changing needs.

Investing as a Family

We forge deep connections with the creators and stewards of family wealth. These relationships span years and cross generations; in our more than 30-year history, nearly half of our clients have been with us for 10+ years, and over 300 have partnered with us for longer than 20 years.

We want you to succeed beyond your expectations in the areas you care about: building lasting legacies, transitioning values and financial assets to future generations, and giving back to the communities and causes that are most important to you.

You have a dedicated team working with your entire family. The team is flexible enough that you can incorporate your next generation into wealth discussions as much or as little as you choose.

Behind the scenes, your team is in constant communication and is fully aware of your family’s overall needs. We develop your investment plan based on a family or household basis, consider the family when constructing a tax-efficient investment portfolio, and group management fees for family members to help reduce the overall impact.

We offer a number of seminars and programs to help promote the idea of wealth stewardship, including philanthropy, inter-generational wealth transfer and education for the next generation.

Family wealth can be complex and requires a coordinated approach. We work closely with your existing specialist advisors for estate planning, tax and other investments to create an integrated experience. We also work with you to better understand your philanthropic goals and family governance.

If you require an advisor in a particular discipline, we have access to a network of industry professionals and can objectively connect you with the best in class for the task at hand. Together, we want to ensure that all your needs are met.

As Investment Counsellors to many successful families across the country, we understand that charitable giving is a significant financial objective. Our clients offer their support by giving financially, volunteering their time and talent, and generously providing other personal resources through one-time or ongoing gifts (using private foundations or similar structures) and planned donations via their estates.

Charitable giving can enrich a family’s bond, particularly across generations. Family members have the opportunity to express their values and discuss causes that are personally important to them while also sharing goals and objectives as a family. Charitable giving also offers tax benefits and, when planned well, these tax savings may help the family achieve other financial planning and legacy objectives.

We offer Burgundy clients access to donor-advised funds through the Burgundy Legacy Foundation. Our approach to family wealth stewardship facilitates your philanthropy considerations. We work with you to structure your portfolio with your charitable goals in mind, and offer resources to learn and grow in these areas as a family.

More about Burgundy

Over three-quarters of our people are owners of the firm, so we understand investing is about more than just money – because it’s our money too.

Our Investment Team has built a deep understanding of quality-value investment opportunities in equities and fixed income, and within equities across the geographic regions of Canada, the U.S., Europe, Asia and Emerging Markets.

Burgundy serves individuals and households with $3 million or more to invest. At times we may accept investors below this threshold if they have the capacity to meet the minimum investment in the future. Investment fees vary based on your portfolio. We will recommend a combination of Burgundy strategies that best reflect your unique needs and will provide the associated fee breakdown. Learn more in a meeting.
